KoMets keep rolling with fifth straight win

K-M comes from behind to win state tournament rematch.

The Kasson-Mantorville girls basketball team is continuing to play great basketball as it has rolled off five straight wins after victories over Rochester Lourdes and New Prague last week.

The KoMets, who are currently ranked sixth in Class AAA, leaned on dominant play inside and some hot shooting to keep their strong play alive.

The week began with K-M hosting Lourdes in a HVL conference matchup. Like so many times in the early part of the season, the KoMets raced out to an early lead thanks to a 23-4 run to begin the game. The lead would swell to 48-16 at the half and the KoMets would wind up coasting for an 85-55 victory.

“We got off to such a fast start tonight,” K-M Head Coach Ryan Haraldson observed. “It was hard to keep that same intensity for the entire game. We’ll need to make that a point of emphasis in the future.”

With Lourdes missing Megan Hobday, the KoMets were able to own the inside as Kristin Scott posted a career-high 35 points and Peyton Seuss added 16 of her own. K-M was also able to dominate the glass as it outrebounded the Eagles by a 46-23 margin including 15 from Scott and 10 from Seuss and seven from Amber Glawe.

The KoMets would have a tougher time on Friday night as they traveled to New Prague for a rematch of a Class AAA State quarterfinal matchup. For the first time this season, the KoMets found themselves behind at halftime, but were able to make a big run to begin the second half.

The Trojans were able to use full court pressure to slow down the KoMets, but freshman point guard Bailey Berge did a great job in running the offense in her first career varsity start. K-M was also able to contain Maizie Diehl thanks to the strong defensive efforts from Maddie and Lexie Worden.

Abby Wigham also played a major role in this game as the KoMets raced out to a ten-point lead in the second half. The senior forward had 14 of her career-high 17 points in the second half and added six assists to aid the come-from-behind effort.
