Normalcy returns in time for summer

Corn is screaming in the field as hot weather invades southeastern Minnesota and causes a growth surge following our cool, wet May weather.

Corn that was only a few inches a week or so ago is now a foot or more tall. It’s crazy to watch the surge. Who knows, corn may reach “knee high by July 4” if things continue to heat up and nature chips in with it a bit of rain.

Cornfield artistry has been replacing the soil’s brown hue with deep emerald green over most of the region.

As a whole, society is returning to normal. Just like warm weather and corn growth, the increase of vaccinated folks has lowered the governmental controls held over our heads. With mandatory mask restrictions lifted and the abolition of social distancing, there is life activity returning to the state. Kids are out of school, no more distance learning, hybrid education or concerns about the spread of the virus in the classroom.

In fact, the Kasson Aquatic Center is the place to be for a number of young and old swimmers, toddlers and exuberant teens all enjoying 90-degree heat and cooling off. Moms and teens are once again working on their tan and chillin’.

It’s euphoric! I recall walking to the bank last winter when the wind chill factor was

-20 and ice covered every inch of the sidewalks.

Ah, summer. It’s time to get out and enjoy our beautiful surroundings. A few days ago I was driving the back roads when I spotted an enormous adult bald eagle feasting on the carcass, but he soared off when I tried to get close enough for a good photo. As he took off to “safety” two crows moved in on the eagle’s kill to assist in devouring the animal. Once endangered, the bald eagle has returned to our neck of the woods.

The Kasson-Mantorville cheer squad is collecting those aluminum cans that add up fast during the hot summer days. Drop off your empty cans at the trailer located at Kasson’s Casey’s store.

As of Monday, we have new neighbors. Accentra Credit Union moved in next to us at the DCI. They’re new to Kasson. I doubt they’ll be giving away free samples, but folks may want to stop by and say hello.

We have a new staff member. Jamie Miller joined the DCI staff to assist in production as the DCI and ADvantage continue to grow.
