Heat’s on and the corn’s head high
As we embark on the Dodge County Free Fair, holding true to mid-summer heat, the hot humid days of summer are encroaching on our county.
Corn has been surpassing the knee high by the Fourth of July and pushing to head high by the fair.
Without rain, however, the corn and soybean crops will begin to show signs of fatigue.
There are many stories circulating about the year it rained so hard many of the buildings at the fairgrounds were prone to leak. We don’t want a repeat of that soggy fair week, but a bit of rain on our crops will make for happy farmers visiting the fairgrounds.
Many folks have been sheltering in place, not due to the Delta strain of COVOD-19, but because of the intense heat. A few air conditioning units have been stressed to breaking down and leaving homeowners in sweltering heat boxes they call home.
Regardless of what is on tap from the National Weather Service, many county residents will show up for this weekend’s festivities.
Bull riding, demolition derby and musical venues will entertain in the early evening hours along with curious visitors wandering through 4-H and FFA exhibits throughout the grounds.
We’re excited to have a booth in the commercial building this year. We’re offering new subscribers a Dodge County Free Fair special of $20 a year, plus a $5 gift card to Clem’s Cups & Cones. For those faithful subscribers we’ll offer a full year and a half (that’s 18 months) for only $40, a savings of $26.
Families with small children will have fun as well. Each kid under 16 will have a chance to win his or her own $5 Clem’s Gift Card by tossing three bags on a Corn Hole board.
Everyone will want to stop by and view our rotating photo display that Wayne Hendrickson has put together with photos captured over the last year.
Or you should stop by just to say hello.
KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT
After eating an entire bull, a mountain lion felt so good he started roaring. He kept it up until a hunter came along and shot him... The moral: When you're full of bull, keep your mouth shut.
