First world problems

There is a term that has been used more and more often called “first world problems.” That was exactly the case for me last week.

I had just gotten home from coaching a track meet and from picking up my girlfriend from work in Owatonna since she had car pooled with someone the day before to head over to Granite Falls.

It was about 11 p.m. by the time we had gotten home, and we didn’t have supper yet, so I said, “hey let's order Dominos.” That was a huge mistake on my part.

My girlfriend went on her phone to order some food for delivery and to our surprise we found out the Kasson location was closed for the night.

We were certainly disappointed to say the least.

As a city boy, turned small town midwestern, I sometimes forget that towns don’t have many options for late night food, especially when it comes to delivery.

Growing up, we had many places, including multiple pizza places, that would deliver into the early hours of the morning, so when I moved to Minnesota, I knew I would be up for a challenge (especially because of the lack of Dunkin Donuts).

After looking through the cabinets, freezer, and fridge, I realized that we didn’t have any real options for making something that wouldn’t require a lot of effort and or time and with it being closer to midnight, we knew cooking up a meal wasn’t a realistic option for us.

But then it happened. I came up with an idea.

I had remembered one time, we had gone to Kwik Trip to grab a couple of frozen pizzas during the winter, and my girlfriend had espoused me to the fact that Kwik Trip can make those pizzas for you there in the matter of minutes.

With this in mind, I got on the phone and called over the Kasson store asking if they could throw a couple of pizzas in the oven for us to pick up.

They said no problem and by the time I drove from my apartment on the northeast part of town to the store, it was ready for me to take home.

On my way there and on my way home, I thought to myself “how lucky am I to live in a country where no matter the time we can order and have food ready for us in the matter of minutes.”

Believe me when I say this, living in a small town for the last two years has been a completely different world for me than where I grew up.

I don’t have the luxury of having multiple grocery stores that are open 24/7 or restaurants. I don’t have multiple Dunkin Donuts on the same street, within blocks from my house, like I was accustomed to for the first 21 years of my life.

But one thing I have is the opportunity to live in an amazing country, where we all have access to things at any time that people in third world countries can only dream of.

And for that I am forever thankful for!
