Cost-saving measures to save money

Everyone wants to keep more of his or her hard-earned money. There are at least a dozen ideas to help folks keep more of their dollars.

After maxing out credit cards buying Christmas gifts, many are trying by paying the minimum amount each month, which is useless. When most card companies charge more than 20% interest it’s a losing battle.

There are ways of saving money at home.

If you’re a smoker, quit. Smoking a pack a day costs more than $2,000, not to mention increased health risks and costs attached to dealing with lung diseases.

Convert those conventional incandescent light bulbs to LED bulbs. They will cost more, but last decades and users notice a lower light bill.

Review memberships not being used. If you’re a member of a club or organization and don’t have time to enjoy it, cancel that membership and join when you have more time.

Before going to Erdman’s make a grocery list. (And, don’t grocery shop when you’re hungry.) Having a list in hand also avoids impulse buying.

When possible, buy in bulk. Check Erdman’s ad and coupon book.

Eat out less. But when you do, visit local restaurants so you’re not spending gas money to travel out of town.

When eating at home during the warmer months – they are coming, eventually – use your grill. Using the stove or oven during summer months, forces the air conditioning to work harder and electric bills to skyrocket.

This next one is going to hit home for many: Stop buying expensive coffee. Those lattes are only $5 but if purchased five days a week it amounts to $100 a month just for coffee! That’s $1,200 for the year. (Even Scandinavians can live with coffee made at home.)

If you’re a veteran, look for discounts at stores that honor those who have served our nation.

These are just a few ideas to save money and spend it to clean up debt and have breathing room financially.

Financial Peace University, a course offered by Dave Ramsey, the guru of controlling spending and eliminating debt, is available in the area for those folks needing assistance in putting the brakes on spending. Find information at: www.daveramsey.com/FPU.
