Bring on summer fun throughout area

Summer always seems like the shortest season of the year in Minnesota, so we all like to pack as much fun as we can into every day.

Luckily, Steele County residents have plenty of opportunities to do that right in our own backyard – festivals, parks and hiking trails, golf courses, ball fields, lakes, and of course, the best county fair around.

In this issue, you’ll find lots of ideas for planning your summer activities. We have another list for you to keep handy, a few simple summer safety suggestions:

Remember the sunscreen. While soaking up that summer sunshine, use SPF 30 or higher and reapply at least every two hours to help prevent not only painful sunburn but skin cancers and premature aging.

Hydrate. Drink plenty of water and eat foods with high water content (think celery, watermelon, cucumbers), especially when you’re active and perspiring. Dehydration can lead to life-threatening complications like heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Buckle up. Last year, 108 people who weren’t wearing seat belts died in Minnesota vehicle crashes, the highest number since 2014. Some people won’t turn the key until every person in their vehicle is buckled up. Seems to us like an excellent standard.

Keep an eye on the weather. We’ve already seen some devastating storms this year. Follow Steele County SKYWARN on Facebook or check their website for storm warnings and other detailed information.

Stay safe while you’re enjoying all the summer fun Steele County has to offer!
