Michael Rae ‘Mikey’ Helmbrecht, Gunnison, Colorado
Michael Rae “Mikey” Helmbrecht, otherwise known as Opie to those who knew him when his hair was still red, passed away due to cardiac arrest in his home in Gunnison, Colo. On May 16, 2021.
After graduating from high school, Mike briefly attended college in Wisconsin before settling in at St. Cloud State. In the fall of his third year, Crested Butte Mountain Resort recruited Mikey to spend a winter ski season working for them in Crested Butte, Colo. He returned to Minnesota after the ski season came to an end but after only a few short weeks, CBMR called him back by offering him a summer job with them.
The rest is history.
He made his home in Mt. Crested Butte, Colo., until 1992, when he purchased a home in Gunnison. He made the daily commute to Crested Butte, working for a small number of local companies as a handyman, a mechanic, a plumber. Mike was the “fix-it” guy. In 2014 he found himself a home with the Alpha Mechanical Solutions family in Gunnison.
Mike lived in the Gunnison Valley for over 35 years, crossed paths with 100s of people over the years and as anyone can tell you, he was one of a kind. Mikey was an amazing human, a great and loyal friend and loving brother, son and nephew. He is going to be greatly missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his. Mother, Rebecca Helmbrecht, as well as several uncles, cousins, and grandparents.
He is survived by his father, Lee Helmbrecht, his sister, Vicki Sutphin, his brother-in-law Hoyt Sutphin and his godmother, Vera Schuck, as well as several aunts, cousins, and many, many friends.
A celebration of life is to be held Sunday, June 13, at 2 p.m. at the I Bar Ranch in Gunnison, Colo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Heart Association.
