James Frederick Biwer, 83, Kasson

Tuesday, October 18, 2022, we lost our father, grandfather and husband, James Frederick Biwer, 83, of Kasson. He leaves behind an incredible legacy and will be forever missed.

Jim was born on August 26, 1939, on a farm southwest of Chester, Iowa to Paul and Elizabeth (Shea) Biwer. The third oldest of 10 children, he grew up farming and building from a young age. His father instilled a strong work ethic which was admired by many. Nothing was impossible. If something could not be repaired, built, or moved, Jim took on the challenge.

Jim attended Assumption Grade School and Notre Dame High School in Cresco, Iowa. He worked for his father at Biwer Mfg. Co., building farm equipment including grain elevators and grain wagons. Jim took this knowledge on to create many more projects including a 900 Bushel Grain Wagon he built with his Grandson in 2015.

Jim proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1956-1959. He started farming as Shamrock Farms in Rochester, in 1965 while working at Peoples Natural Gas for many years. In 1974 Jim bought a farm south of Kasson and moved with his family to begin raising hogs and farm crops full time.

Jim had three very influential people in his life that made him the man we all know. His dad, Paul Biwer, “Gunny” Gunnery Sergeant, the man who shaped him as a Marine, and Percy Haven, Sheriff  of Howard County, Iowa.

Jim met (Ginny) Virginia Lee (Tilford) Biwer at The Colonial Cafe near Peoples Natural Gas in Rochester. His first visit to the cafe when Ginny was working, he ordered 12 eggs and 6 orders of hashbrowns. She brought 6 coffee cups thinking he was expecting more people. Surprisingly she did not run, when he ate the entire meal himself. They were married in 1965 and together raised four children.

Jim is survived by his wife of 57 years, his children: Tim (Darcy) of Wasioja, Pat of Elba, Shannon (Tony) Paulson of Mantorville and Mike of Wasioja. Grandchildren: Alixandra and Ben Verchota, Dakota, Erin, Jacob, Joe, Nick, Jimmy, Hannah, Jack, Charlie, Megan and Henry. Siblings: Marie Walsh, Joan Jordahl, Denise Hanson, Fern Rogers, Mark Biwer and many nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents and siblings: Paul Cleo, Don, Irene Krieg, Ruth Frost and one grandchild.

A graveside service will be held at Wildwood Cemetery in Wasioja, on Friday, October 28, 2022, at 4 p.m. with a Celebration of Life following the service at Hyland Systems, 500 Eugene Street, West Concord.
