Elmer John Hungate, 84, Dodge Center

Elmer John Hungate, 84, of Dodge Center, passed away on Saturday, August 21, 2021, at Mayo Clinic Methodist Campus in Rochester.

Elmer was born November 6, 1936, to William Lester and Adah Ruth (Robison) Hungate in Rock Island, Ill. He graduated from United Township High School in East Moline, Ill., in 1954.

Elmer married Mattie Rebecca (Becky) Hodge on November 12, 1960. Becky passed away in 1984. Elmer married Shirley Zwart Traff on August 1, 1987.

He served in the U.S. Army for three years, from 1959-1962. After the Army, he worked for IBM for 28 years. His work as a Customer Engineer and then Computer Programmer took him to many locations. He started in Moline, Ill., and several other cities in Illinois, then Palo Alto, Calif., and Rochester, until retirement.

Elmer enjoyed computers, old cars, crossword puzzles, telling jokes, singing funny songs, and most of all spending time with his family. Elmer is survived by his wife, Shirley; son, James (Teresa) Hungate, Plattsmouth, Neb.; daughters, Rebecca (Stephen) Knutson, Dodge Center, Julie (Chris) Winkels, New Market, Kathryn Traff, Fort Myers, Fla., Laura (Jeff) Reese, Hallock; grandchildren, Erin (Michael Waits) Tarplee, Garrett (Erica Henderson) Hungate, Matthew (Sarah) Cook, Elliot Hungate, Lauren (Dale Reid) Stang, Kaitlyn (Derek) Hawkins, Lucas (Kaelyn) Knutson, Jacob Knutson, Isaak Knutson, Johnathan Winkels, and Nicholas Winkels; great-grandchildren, Jack, Nathaniel, Michael, Johnny, Madison, Charlotte, Tyler, Tiernan, and Addison; sisters, Mary Francis, Burleson, Tex., Martha (Fred) Giesler, Erie, Ill., and Joyce Snyder, Cambridge, Ill.; sister-in-law, Theresa Hungate, Weatherford, Tex., and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Becky; son, John; brothers, Carl (Betty), David (Jennifer), Allen, and Richard.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 27, 2021, at Faith Lutheran Church, 308 2nd St NW in Dodge Center, with Pastor Mike Zaske officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, August 26, 2021, at Czaplewski Family Funeral Homes, 25 South Street SW in Dodge Center and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. A luncheon will follow the funeral service at the church.

Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Rochester, with military honors provided by the Rochester American Legion Post #92.
