Carl Edward Ziemann, 81, Mantorville

Carl Edward Ziemann, age 81, of Mantorville, passed away peacefully at his home in Mantorville on September 5, 2021 after a 19 month courageous battle with cancer. Carl was born on October 30, 1939, to Harry and Gladys (Weber) Ziemann in Correctionville, Iowa.

He attended Byron High School and graduated in 1957. On June 10, 1961, he married the love of his life, Ellen Hopper, in Pine Island at Saint Paul Lutheran Church. The couple would go on to enjoy 60 years of marriage and be blessed with three children, Bryan, Gaylee, and Kevyn.

Carl served in the Army from 1962 to 1965 and, while living in Northfield, was stationed at the Air Defense Command in Farmington. Following his military service, the couple moved back to the Kasson area where Carl built the house he and Ellen shared for 43 years.

The couple then moved to Mantorville, in 2008. Carl was employed at IBM as a mechanical engineer for 32 years until retiring in 1991. After retiring, they had the opportunity to deliver travel trailers across the U.S. and Canada in their spare time.

He was also able to enjoy many travels with Ellen, such as to Alaska and China, along with many other global destinations. In his younger years, Carl helped build the family cabin in Atikokan, Ontario along with his father and mother. Carl enjoyed summers at the cabin with family and friends, relaxing and fishing. He also enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling, and attending his grandchildren’s school functions. Carl was active at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kasson in many roles, including ushering, reading scripture, and participation on the church board. He always looked forward to working the annual lutefisk suppers, while volunteering his time in the kitchen.

Carl is preceded in death by his parents, Harry, and Gladys; his brother Vincent; and his sister Joyce.

Carl is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Ellen; children, Bryan (Jennifer) Ziemann of Solon Springs, Wis., Gaylee (Cory) Brady of Hammond, Wis., and Kevyn (Jamie) Ziemann of Grant, Minn.; along with four grand- children and four step-grandchildren.
