ZED lures students into learning

Some students learn best by doing and thanks to grant money from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) the students at Zumbrota Education District (ZED) South are getting academic skills by running their own fishing lure business.

Carl Olson, science teacher at ZED South, said that just by taking part in the lure business the students have the opportunity to utilize and develop a variety of academic skills.

“There’s just so much cross-curricular exposure there. Not only are we doing ecology and fishing, we’re also doing business, marketing, and math,” he said.

Another reason why this lure business is effective, he said, is because the ZED South is a level four setting EBD, emotional and behavioral disorders, program.

“We have 40 or 50 kids in the whole building, K-12, and all of them have high behavioral needs, so we need non-traditional options for them to earn their credit,” he said.
