Hayfield man charged after weekend stabbing in Dodge Center

A 34-year-old Hayfield man has been charged following a stabbing incident in Dodge Center over the weekend.

On Saturday, January 15, shortly after 12 p.m., Dodge County deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a stabbing in Dodge Center, according to Sheriff Scott Rose.

The 30-year-old male victim and his wife reported a friend, 34-year-old Tyler Stroud from Hayfield, arrived at their home and was not acting himself – they believed he was off his meds and not acting right, Rose said.

Rose said the suspect was asked to leave and refused, and this escalated into a confrontation where Stroud allegedly stabbed the male victim and then fled in a Chevrolet sedan with dark tinted windows.

Deputies and Dodge Center Ambulance provided medical care to the victim while other deputies searched the area but were unable to locate Stroud or the vehicle, Rose said. An alert was sent to all surrounding agencies for probable cause arrest for Stroud for 2nd Degree Assault.

The victim was transported to St Mary’s Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was still in the hospital on Tuesday.

Rose said on Sunday, Dodge County was advised by the Minnesota State Patrol that they were following Stroud in that same vehicle. Multiple vehicles from State Patrol, Dodge County Sheriff’s Office, and the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office had been following the vehicle, without lights and sirens. This was not a pursuit, Rose said, rather this was law enforcement following the suspect vehicle trying to avoid another pursuit in hopes of getting the vehicle to stop at some point and safely take Stroud into custody without risk of harming him or others on the roadway.

The vehicle continued to drive on random roads in both Dodge and Olmsted County before stopping at the stop sign at 11th Street and Olmsted County Road 5.

Two Dodge County Deputies boxed in the vehicle, front and rear, and initiated a felony traffic stop.

Stroud was arrested and taken into custody without further incident. He was transported to the Steele County Jail in Owatonna and his vehicle was towed for processing.

Stroud appeared in Dodge County Court Tuesday morning and was formally charged with felony 2nd Degree assault with a Dangerous Weapon, felony 5th Degree Drug Possession, felon in possession of ammunition, and 2 counts misdemeanor weapons possession.

Unconditional bail was set at $200,000 and he was transported back to the Steele County Dentention Center.
