KoMets Take Down Osage!

Last Saturday, the KoMets returned home from Iowa with yet another Green Devils Dual title. This one was earned through blood, sweat, and tears. Okay, there were no tears, but there was blood and sweat.

Osage is currently ranked #1 in the state of Iowa in Class AA. They entered the dual with nine ranked wrestlers to Kasson-Mantorville’s seven. The KoMets are ranked #3 in MN, Class AA, behind Simley and Becker.

The tournament’s opening match of the day began at 126 and progressed up the line-up with each round. The finals started at 160.

Junior Dominic Mann, put the KoMets on the board, winning by decision, 3-0. The last time Mann started a team dual was when he wrestled 106 as an eighth grader. Mann understood the importance of getting the team on the board early.

The marque match-up of the day came at 170. Senior Cole Glazier vs Nicholas Fox. Both ranked #1 in their state, both ranked nationally at 170. Glazier is committed to wrestle at St. Cloud State University. Fox is headed to the University of Northern Iowa, where he will wrestle for Osage’s legendary alumni, Doug Schwab. Glazier won the match by decision 3-1, extending KM’s lead, 6-0.

Head Coach Ryan Hill had several guys doubled up at weights. By doing so, Hill was able to create movement in the line-up.

Osage grabbed their first win with a pin at 182 over Jacob Duitsman. Eli Richardson would counter that with a pin of his own his at 195.

The KoMets would then face the Muller brothers at 220 and Heavyweight. Barrett Muller (220) demonstrated why his is ranked #1, putting up a quick six points over Kayden White.

With the team score now tied 12-12, two ranked heavyweights took the mat. Heath Parrish vs Mac Muller. In true heavyweight fashion, the match was six minutes of hand fighting, hard collar ties, and upper body greco throws. Parrish stayed in good position and hung on for the 9-6 decision, putting the KoMets back in the lead, 15-12.

The lighter weights then took the mat, led by Broc Vaughan (106). Vaughan put on a hard ride, winning by decision, 3-0.

Kalin Anderson enters the line-up for the KoMets at 113, even though he barely tips the scale at 100 pounds. But don’t tell Anderson he’s undersized. If one could weigh his heart, you would think he wrestled heavyweight. Anderson fought for six straight minutes against a very tough opponent, Garrett Tusler, only giving up a decision, 5-1.

Jonah Coleman (120) faced off against the younger Fox brother. Blake Fox, ranked #3, earned a major decision, 11-3 over Coleman. Osage then took the lead for the first time in the dual, 19-18 over the KoMets.

The Friedrich twins cancelled out each other’s matches. Aiden Friedrich (126) grabbed a quick pin in the first period. Owen (132) found himself on the receiving end of a pin by #3 ranked Anders Kittelson.

Osage went on to build their lead at 138. Senior, Noah Swarts, weighed in for the first time this season at 138. Swarts dropped a high scoring match by decision, 14-10.

With KM now trailing 24-28, there were only two weights left, 145 and 152. Juniors Joey Kennedy and Luke Swanson had work to do.

Kennedy (145) worked for the pin fall, but ended with a technical fall, putting the KoMets back in the lead, 29-28.

Swanson (152) took on the role as the team closer, something only heavyweights usually feel. With the pressure on him of simply not losing, Swanson went out and made a statement. Like Kennedy, Swanson put on a tilting display, turning his opponent for near fall points, securing the team victory with a technical fall. The KoMets won the highly anticipated dual, 34-28.

This dual was not only import to the KoMets to keep their border battle winning streak over Osage, but also to test their line-up as the Zumbrota-Mazeppa dual draws near. ZM’s line-up is solid, one the KoMets will most likely meet at team sections and will need to get past to punch their ticket to state in March. Osage recently beat ZM at the Clash, 36-28. Albert Lea is also lurking as a threat when it comes to team sections. No team can be overlooked.

The dual vs ZM has been rescheduled to Saturday, February 4 in Mazeppa at 12 p.m.

“We had a blast down in Osage. The guys wrestled well. They were excited to wrestle those teams and it showed in how we competed. It’s great seeing the energy on the bench translate into scores,” said Hill.

“We found ourselves in a back-and-forth battle with Osage. We talked a lot this week about knowing our roles and doing our jobs and for the most part we did. Our guys had to get tough in a hostile environment and they came out on top. Osage, and all those teams, exposed some positions we have to get better in, and I can’t wait to get back to work this week to fix them.” said Ryan.

“Whenever you have the opportunity to wrestle a nationally ranked team and beat them in their own house, it’s a great day. My match was a lot of fun and I think I wrestled well against a good wrestler. This dual was a great confidence booster as our team moves into the dual season and a couple weeks until post season,” said Parrish.

“The Osage duals are always fun. The hostile environment that they bring makes it even more fun to take them out in their own gym. I liked being one the first matches so I could sit back and enjoy the dual once I was done. The guys competed hard and rose to the occasion to bring the Green Devil title back home to Kasson-Mantorville, where it belongs for another year,” said Glazier.
