KoMets split doubleheader against Stewartville

Kasson-Mantorville’s KoMets traveled to Stewartville on Saturday, April 24, for a doubleheader against the Tigers.

Things did not start well for the KoMets yielding 8 unearned runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Tigers tacked on 1 more in the bottom of the 2nd to take an early 9-0 lead. KoMets started to chip away by scoring 3 in the top of the 3rd highlighted by singles from Landon Andrist and Brooks Buchanan. The KoMets tallied 1 more run in the top of the 7th after a double by Kyler Kujath.

However, it was not enough as the KoMets dropped game 1 by a score of 10-4.

Game 2 was a back and forth battle. Scoreless thru 2, the Tigers pushed across 2 in the top of the 3rd. The KoMets responded with 2 of their own in the bottom half with singles by Buchanan, Landen Wenzel and Corbin Horning.

They remained tied at 2 until the Tigers pushed across 3 more runs in the top of the 6th to lead 5-2. The KoMets scored 1 in the bottom of the 6th before the Tigers put 2 more in the run column to lead 7-3 headed to the bottom of the 7th. The KoMets continued to battle by drawing a few walks and putting the ball in play.

The KoMets tied the game at 7 with 2 outs. Brooks Buchanan came to the plate with the bases loaded and lined a single down the left field line to win the game for the KoMets. Kyler Kujath got the W on the mound after pitching 1 inning in relief.

KoMets vs. Tigers

Kasson-Mantorville’s KoMets fell behind early in a match up with Lake City last week, but bats woke up late to take a 14-6 win over the Lake City Tigers. 

The Tigers took a 4-0 lead early, highlighted by a home run from Ben Nutt and two doubles from Justin Wohlers through the first three innings. 

The KoMets came alive in the bottom of the third inning putting up nine runs highlighted by bases clearing doubles from Dalton Maxwell and Kyler Kujath. 

Lake City responded with one run in the top of the 4th inning before the KoMets tacked across three runs in the bottom of the fourth and two in the bottom of the fifth. 

Kellen Wilke had 3 RBI's on two singles and Sean Inman contributed a RBI single over those two innings. 

The Tigers brought across one more in the top of the sixth to bring the final score to 14-6. 

Maxwell picked up the W for the KoMets, tossing 5 innings and striking out 7. 

KoMets return to action on Saturday, April 24, for a doubleheader at Stewartville.

KoMets vs. Bears

It was a closer game on Thursday, April 15, when the KoMets battled the Byron Bears to a 5-4 victory. 

The KoMets got things going in the first inning with 3-runs highlighted by a RBI double by Corbin Horning and a 2-RBI single by Dalton Maxwell. 

Byron’s Bears responded with single run in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly from Jake Coshenet. 

In the top of the second, Kyler Kujath doubled and was brought in by Landon Wenzel a few pitches later. 

Multiple zeros ensued as the KoMets held a 4-1 lead headed to the bottom of the fifth inning. At that point, the Bears started to chip away by adding one run in the fifth, sixth, and bringing in the tying run in the bottom of the seventh. 

In extra innings, the KoMets were able to squeeze across a run across in the top of the ninth as Wenzel singled in Landen Andrist. Kellen Wilke started the game on the mound for the KoMets. The righty allowed 5 hits and 4 runs over 7 innings, while striking out six. 

Wenzel took the W for the KoMets while pitching two innings and giving up no runs on no hits while striking out 3.
