KoMets outscore opponents at home 185-36

Last week was a busy week at home for the KM wrestlers. They secured three solid wins and outscored their opponents 185-36.  

The KoMet’s home opener was meant to be a triangular with Stewartville and Pine Island. As this year would have it with the every changing schedules, Pine Island needed to postpone their match up due to a COVID-19 concern.   

The KoMets grabbed nine pin falls against Stewartville. Luke Swanson (113), Joey Kennedy (126), Dominic Mann (132), Keyan Laganiere (138), Logan Vaughan, Cole Glazier (160), Kail Wynia (170), Bennett Berge (182) all secured pins for the KoMets in their 63-9 victory over Stewartville.

Thursday night the KoMets hosted Kenyon-Wanamingo (KW) and Lewiston-Altura/Rushford Peterson (LARP). The KoMets continued their dominant performance. They beat KW 61-12 and LARP 61-15.

In a fast moving dual against KW, the marquee match-up came at 195. Jackson Kennedy, ranked #5 at 195 in Class AA, faced KW’s only ranked wrestler, Carter Quam, ranked #5 at 220 for Class A.  Kennedy came away with an 8-4 decision.   

Dylan Baker provided another high energy match at 152 against KW’s Bray Olson. Receiving two forfeits this season, this match was Baker’s return in action since his knee surgery last season. Baker secured a 2nd period pin fall (2:48).

Next up was LARP. LARP took an early lead in the lower weights. With LARP ahead 12-6 after 120, the KoMets shifted gears to pull ahead and go on to claim a 61-15 victory.  

"Overall, as a team, we wrestled well. The guys did a real good job executing on offense and converting that offensive into points," said Head Coach Jamie Heidt.  

Wrestlers going 3-0 for the week were B. Vaughan, Joey Kennedy, D. Mann, L. Vaughan, C. Glazier, K. Wynia, B. Berge, Jackson Kennedy, & R. Parrish.  

“We looked very solid last week. This week we are going to have to step it up! We have two big duals and they are going to be fun!” said junior Bennett Berge.  

The KoMets narrow their focus on what will be a highly competitive triangular Friday night. The wrestlers will travel up to Inver Grove Heights where Simley will host the KoMets and Stillwater in a night of state, and even nationally ranked, match-ups.   

Simley, the defending state champions, are currently ranked #1 in Class AA. The KoMets are ranked #2. These two hope to meet head-to-head in a section title match if the MSHSL approves a post-season. Stillwater is currently ranked #1 in Class AAA.  

"We look forward to Friday's duals with Stillwater and Simley. Our program has always embraced competition.  We will continue to pick up the intensity in our workouts this week to get ready for Friday," Heidt said. 

The KoMets will enter Friday’s triangular with six state ranked wrestlers in their line-up. Stillwater currently has eight ranked wrestlers and Simley will step onto the mat with 13 state ranked wrestlers.
