It was a late throw to second.

K-M’s Spencer Anderson has no-hit-shutout against Lake City

Kasson-Mantorville’s baseball team had a double-header date with Lake City last Wednesday, April 13. Game one went to the Tigers, 5-4, and the second game belonged to the KoMets, as they blew away LC, 10-0 in a five-inning rout, behind the no-hit, shutout efforts of K-M sophomore Spencer Anderson, in his first varsity game.

Game 1: “We let this game slip away. They scored 5 runs on only 2 hits and did not put the ball in play too much early in the game, but when they did, we couldn’t make a play. Corbin Horning started the game hot and got into some trouble when his fast ball kept running into the right-handed hitters,” commented Coach Matthew Franke.

Horning went 3 1/3 innings, surrendering 4 earned runs, 3 walks, 9 strikeouts, and unfortunately, 5 hit batters. Noah Swarts came in and provided 3 2/3 innings of hitless and scoreless baseball. K-M, despite leaving 8 runners stranded, still had late-game opportunities to tie or take the lead; but they could not plate anyone.

“Max Balow settled in and held us in check after our 4-run second inning,” Coach Franke added. Corbin Horning was 2-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Kyle Nelson’s first varsity hit was a 2-run double to put the KoMets on the board in the 2nd inning. Reese Tripp was also 2-3.

“We had a lot of mental errors plus 4 physical errors in the game. You won’t win too many ball games when you play like that. Noah came in and gave us a chance to win the game, but unfortunately, we came up a little short,” said Coach Franke.

Game 2: “Sophomore Spencer Anderson stole the show in his first varsity game! He threw a 5-inning, no hitter in the 10-0 win. It did not look like it was his first game, as he fired 41 of 62 pitches for strikes. He walked 2 and struck out 5,” Coach Franke said.

K-M’s offense continued to swing well in the second game, collecting 10 more hits in the 5 inning affair. Leading the way with 3 hits and 3 RBI, was Noah Swarts. Nickolas Van Camp went 2-4 with 2 RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Jake Hallstrom was 2-3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.

The KoMets posted one run in the opening frame, and that’s all that Spencer needed. There were a few nice defensive plays in the 5th inning by Kyle Nelson, to help preserve the no hitter. K-M played with more energy in game two and they cleaned-up their mental mistakes and played near flawless baseball for a full game.

“Spencer looked calm and comfortable out there in his first varsity start. He threw strikes and the defense made plays. The team fed off of each other and the hits were contagious,” said Coach Franke.
