Byron gymnasts compete at New Prague Invite

Byron’s girls’ gymnastics team traveled to New Prague for their first meet after the break, on Saturday, January 7.

The girls finished 4th out of nine teams. Host, New Prague, took the win with a score of 146.3. Mankato West and Worthington took second and third, respectively.

Byron finished with their second-best team score of the season, with 135.85. Many of the girls competed new skills for the first time, which was exciting to see. Lydia Evans and Amber Roble led the team in the All-Around. Lydia Evens finished fourth with a personal best score of 35.75 and Amber Roble finished sixth with a score of 35.4.

The girls started the day off at bars. It was not the team’s best showing, but several of the girls went for new skills and we learned a few things as well. Amber Roble and Lydia finished 9th and 10th out 36 participants, with scores of 8.4 and 8.35. Jocie Halfman and Ella Ott finished out the top four finishers for the team, with scores of 7.45 and 7.2. The girls combined score of 31.4, placed them fourth out of the nine teams.

After a bye, the girls moved onto the beam. Lydia Evans had a very strong routine, finishing with her new dismount. Lydia finished fourth with a score of 9.05. Amber Roble performed well, finishing seventh overall with a score of 8.85. Jocie Halfman and Ella Ott rounded out the scoring again, with Jocie finishing with a score of 8.1 and Ella with a score of 7.6. The girls finished with a team score of 33.6, which was good enough for third overall.

After a couple of byes, the girls were back at it on the floor. Lydia and Amber led the way once again. Lydia finished with a score of 9.05 and Amber finished with a score of 8.95. They finished 9th and 10th overall. Sophia Mullenbach finished with an 8.55 and Ella Ott finished with a score of 8.3, to round out the top for team finishers. The girls finished with a floor team score of 34.85, which placed them fourth overall.

The girls finished the day on vault, which proved to be their best over all event of the day. Lydia Evans threw her new vault that has a start value of 10.0. She got the double twisting vault around and got to her feet but could not quite stay up. Even with the fall she still scored a 9.3, good enough for a fourth-place finish. Amber Roble had a nice vault as well, scoring a 9.2 and finishing sixth. Ella Ott had a nice vault and finished ninth with a score of 8.8 and Sophia Mullenbach landed her new vault for the first-time, finishing 11th with a score of 8.7. The girls accumulated 36 points, which placed them fourth overall.
