Boys' basketball

The Vikings boys basketball team battled a tough Maple River squad for the Gopher Conference Championship, on Saturday, February 25. The Eagles, ranked No. 5 in Class AA, tied the game with four-tenths of a second left in regulation, when Aaron Pawlitschek made three free throws. Hayfield went up 64-59 with under a minute left in the first OT, before Pawlitschek hit a three and then a floater to tie it with nine-seconds left.

Hayden Niebuhr scored six of Maple Rivers’ seven points in the second overtime. Hayfield missed a game-winning shot at the end of overtime and a game-tying shot at the end of the second overtime.

Maple River took the 73-70 thrilling victory. Earlier, on Friday, the Vikings bested Bethlehem Academy, 83-53.

Byron boys finish regular season

Byron boys basketball played their final regular season game on Friday, February 24, and they fell to Stewartville, 84-65. That moved the Bears to a 13-13 record, landing square in the middle of the Hiawatha Valley Conference.

KoMet boys have trouble with Tigers

With just three games remaining on the regular season docket, the Kasson-Mantorville basketball boys lost to Lake City, 71-49, on Friday, February 24. Currently, the KoMets sit at 7-15 overall on the year.

Following a Friday victory over Blooming Prairie, the Triton
basketball boys defeated Lewiston-Altura, 58-56, on Saturday, February 25.

After winning their penultimate regular season game of the year, the Triton Cobras now stand at 8-17 overall; having edged a formidable Blooming Prairie team, 61-57, on Friday, February 24.
