Area girls basketball teams compete in holiday tournaments
Local girls basketball teams were busy last week competing in holiday tournaments.
Lady Bears at Rotary Classic
ROCHESTER — The Byron girls basketball team participated in the Rotary Holiday Classic on Thursday, December 29, and Friday, December 30, at the Mayo Civic Center. On Thursday, the 6-2 Byron Bears lost to the 9-1 White Bear Lake team, 63-45, to get the tourney started. Friday’s action saw the Lady Bears fall to the 8-1 Mayo Spartans, 69-49.

Mayo Game: Mayo and Byron played to the wire a year ago in the Rotary tournament, before the Spartans finally pulled out a narrow win. However, this Friday’s contest was pretty much a walk in the park for Mayo, who was never seriously challenged. The Spartans led 35-18 at intermission. Lady KoMets in holiday tourney
The Kasson-Mantorville girls basketball team competed in the Lewiston Auto Holiday Classic at Winona State University, on Thursday and Friday, December 29 and 30.
Winona Game: The opening round featured K-M against Winona. It was a closely matched, back-and-forth contest, and the Winhawks overcame a stretch of cold shooting to pull-out a 70-64 win. At one point, the KoMets went on a 14-4 run, including a big three by senior Ella Babcock, to give Kasson-Mantorville its first lead of the game. After a missed layup for Winona and a successful one for the Komets, the score stood at 29-26 at halftime.
The Hawks hit another three and regained the lead for Winona, 49-48. But the Komets were equal to the challenge and tied the game, 59-59, with less than three minutes left. Some timely buckets and tough defense gave the Winhawks the eventual victory. Keigan Cummings led the KoMets with 16 points, followed by Makenzie Carrier and Ella Stoskopf, with 13 each.
Chatfield Game: Friday, saw the final action in the tournament. The Kasson-Mantorville girls were hitting on all cylinders, as they cruised to a 84-59 victory over the Chatfield Gophers.

Lady Vikings shine at home tournament
It was an undefeated trek for the Hayfield girls basketball team, at their home Holiday Invite on Wednesday, Thursday, December 28, 29. On opening day, the Lady Vikes defeated Blooming Prairie, 56-22. Thursday brought another victory to the Hayfield bunch, as they topped Grand Meadow, 49-46.

Triton girls basketball team competed in the Goodhue Holiday Tournament on Wednesday, Thursday, December 28, 29. In the opening round, Goodhue defeated Triton, 73-19, and on Thursday, the Cobras fell to Maple River, 70-53.
