3 KoMets make Cheesehead podium

The KoMets have reached the halfway point of their season. With Christmas, comes the much-appreciated gift of an two extra pounds!

“We had a great holiday break training phase. The guys followed the plan and understood it was our opportunity to make a jump on competition. It was very apparent as there was a difference in how we competed from the Christmas Tournament to the Cheesehead,” said Head Coach Ryan Hill.

Three KoMets made the podium at the annual Cheesehead. Jonah Coleman (120), Joey Kennedy (145), and Cole Glazier (170).

Coleman and Kennedy both finished seventh, going 4-3 over the weekend. Glazier once again made the finals where he faced Tyler Eise from Colorado. Eise, a sophomore, is currently ranked #6 in the nation at 170. Glazier lost by decision, 5-2.

With the gauntlet of the tournaments behind them (Donnybrook, Christmas, and the Cheesehead), the boys will now shift their focus onto dual competition.

“The dual season is among us and it’s a staple of our program. To win duals, we need guys understanding it’s not about them, but instead about the name on the front of their singlet, our program, and community. We have to know our roles and do our jobs well. We’ll know soon how we are doing with this. We had guys with their best performances to this point at the Cheesehead and it should give us confidence going into the dual season,” said Hill.

Up next, the KoMets will cross the border again into the state of Iowa. Their annual trip down to Osage for the Green Devil Duals provides a full day of wrestling, dual style. Come Saturday, we may see some KoMets at the same weight, giving Coach Hill the flexibility to adjust his line-up as need.

Their toughest competition that day should be the host team, Osage. The Green Devils are currently ranked #1 in the state of Iowa for Class AA. They have nine ranked wrestlers sprinkled throughout their line-up. at 120 (4th), 132 (2nd), 145 (1st), 152 (4th), 160 (6th), 170 (1st), 195 (7th), 220 (1st), Hwt (6th). It will be a true test for the KoMets.

The Osage tournament brings a great wrestling atmosphere. It’s hosted in small town Iowa, with small gyms, wooden bleachers, and loud fans.

“We can’t wait to get down to Osage this weekend. It’s our most important event at the moment and we’re fired up for the hostile environment. We’ll need guys gutting out matches for us to beat that caliber of teams,” said Hill.
