Traveling Art Show is a popular touring exhibit

Now in its 29th year, the Zumbro Education District’s Traveling Art Show is currently moving from school to school, and will conclude its tour at the ZED building in April.

“To actually see it in person is unbelievable,” said Becky Remmele, ZED Special Projects Coordinator. “When you take a look at the detail that some of these students can do, it is just phenomenal. Some of the drawings they do, of a person or of an animal, are just incredible. Each year I’m incredibly amazed at how much talent these students have.”

The ZED Traveling Art Show features 109 pieces of student art, ranging from drawings to paintings, and includes art from students in all of the ZED school districts. ZED is made up of Kasson-Mantorville, Hayfield, Stewartville, Byron, Blooming Prairie and Triton Public Schools.

The Show got its start at Kasson-Mantorville Middle School on Feb. 6 and was on display there for a week. On Feb. 13, K-M held an open house for students in first through 12th grades.

“It’s very exciting for the four art teachers at K-M to watch the progress of students as they complete meaningful art projects that merit being in this art show,” said Marie Torkelson, K-M Middle School visual arts specialist. “We have many talented art students at every grade level and it is sometimes difficult to choose these projects as we are only allowed 24 pieces.”

Students, staff and parents are among those who viewed and appreciated the Traveling Art Show at K-M Middle School from Feb. 6-13, Torkelson said.

“Art instruction helps children with the development of motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision making, risk taking and inventiveness,” she said. “They are also connecting with their own culture as well as with the wider world. Visual Arts empower students to express their ideas, thoughts and feelings in a way like no other.”
