For the Kasson Park & Recreation Friday night co-ed softball league one game was of particular interest. Players from McKern Financial and K-M Nursery Group dressed in costumes provided by Jan’s Costume Shop in Kasson. Ironically Friday was also Sidewalk Sales/Crazy Daze in Kasson. Seanne Buckwater, dressed as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, came up with the idea a couple of years ago and it never quite materialized until this year. Neither McKern Financial or the K-M Nursery Group are at the top of the league so both teams agreed to the dress-up. Not all players were in costume, but enough were to make the game more entertaining than a regular game. Pitching for McKern was Barney (Joe Fitch) and for the K-M Nursery Group team Spider Man (Jerid Myers). Fortunately, the hot summer weather had temporarily left the area or characters like Barney might have been extra warm. Everyone had a good time and there was talk about another character dress-up game next year.

Local resident Mary Jones recently received the Dorothy Hooper Award from the American Red Cross. Mary was honored with this award for her dedication and commitment to serving the residents of Dodge County during times of disaster. Mary is also a shelter team leader and a disaster action team captain. To learn more about joining the Dodge County response team, cal the Red Cross office at 287-2200.

There were nearly 250 kids at the finale for Kasson Public Library reading program in Veterans Memorial Park last Wednesday afternoon. This year the theme was “Caught In the Web of Mystery.” There were drawings for savings bonds and other specialty prizes donated by Kasson businesses. There were also games for the kids which gave them a chance to win library bucks to buy prizes. This year there were 512 kids registered for the summer reading program, of which 60 were new registrations. Last year the kids read 8,000 books and this summer they topped 11,000.

The Kasson Festival In the Park will once again host the Highland/Strongman Games Saturday, August 10 starting at 1 p.m. in Veteran’s Memorial Park. Sign up will begin at 11 a.m. Registrations are limited to the first 15 competitors in each of the two classes, amateur and professional. There will be $3,500 in prize money offered. Former world champion Brad Gillingham will be on hand to help with the event. He recently came off an injury, with very little time to train, and finished second in the national competition. Brothers Karl and Wade will be on hand. Wade won the professional competition last year and Karl gave an impressive “demonstration” of what the strongman events are all about. The Gillingham’s come by some of their ability naturally. Their father, Gale Gillingham, is a former All-Pro with the Green Bay Packers who played under Vince Lombardi. He also has a pair of Super Bowl rings. The events for the competition include the tire flip, dead lift for reps, Hercules hold, log press for reps and the farmers walk.

The K-M wrestling booster clubs will be sponsoring a wrestling camp for elementary aged students from August 3-6. The camp will consist of a session starting at 3:00-4:30 each of the four days. Students who are entering grades 1-6 are free to attend at no cost. Registration will be at the door before the first session. The wrestling club is also willing to provide transportation for wrestlers who have already signed up for the Lake City area wrestling camp. We need at least 12 people signed up by Aug. 1 in order to offer this service. If you have any questions call Leah Lynde at 634-7064.

Dave Delzer from the Dodge County Sheriff’s Posse and Dodge County Sheriff Bill Weber presented Amanda Holland of Dodge Center with a special award on behalf of the sheriff’s posse for her involvement at the fair – helping the younger horse exhibitors, keeping a clean stall around the barn and maintaining a good raport with all of the participants. Honorable mentions were Jill Chelmo and Michelle Noterman.
