K-M Drama’s gearing up to present Shrek the Musical

The Kasson-Mantorville community is getting ready for its fourth all school musical. This year they will be presenting Shrek.

After the new Minnesota Wifi Performing Arts Center opened as part of the Kasson-Mantorville referendum project, school leaders and drama department leaders decided to try an all school musical.

That year they performed the Sound of Music. Ever since then they have had plenty of success of bringing people to K-M for performances.

This year’s show preparations have been going on for months, when first K-M Drama Coach Mel Ferris decided on a musical, and since then been working hard.

“It's been a lot of work by a lot of people all summer long,” Ferris said.

Ferris explained that when they were deciding on what musical to pick they examined many different ones making lists of pros and cons.

After narrowing it down, Ferris realized that Shrek would be the best one to get the most students involved whether they are acting, or helping out behind the scenes.

“We have a large broad base of talent in older grades and we wanted to find a show to use it to the fullest potential, as well as have the younger kids to learn from the older kids,” Ferris explained. “This musical showcases a large variety of talents.”

Ferris said that she feels fortunate that many students in grades 3-12 are very passionate about drama in the district, making it much easier to have a full cast for productions like this one.

When all said and done they expect to have more than 100 students involved with the productions.

“It’s become like a family,” Ferris said.

After filling the 800 seat  PAC seven out of eight times  last year, they decided this year to add an additional night of the performance.

“We felt like we could fill another 800 seats,” Ferris said.

This year’s musical is scheduled for Thursday Nov.7 at noon, Nov.8,914,15 and 16, at 7 p.m. and on Nov.10 and 17, at 2 p.m.
