6 of 7 Byron school board seats up for election

Byron’s school board has six of its seven members up for re-election during November’s election, with filing for the open seats beginning on August 2 and running through August 16.

Because of several resignations this last year, “we have three two-year positions and three four-year positions” up for re-election, said Superintendent Mike Neubeck.

“Change can be good,” he said. “I think it will bring out great ideas and conversations about where the district is going. But we’ll also have to get back to some consistency and make sure that Profile of a Graduate and construction remains a focus no matter who is on the board.”

Neubeck said not many people running for school board might know about the district’s Profile of a Graduate strategic plan, and “we’ll need to inform them.”

He also said there will be some education for new school board members about “what it is to be a school board member and what a school board member is not. School board is vision and governance, not day-to-day operations.”

“It’s a huge change,” Neubeck said. “There aren’t many school boards that face this, but I’m looking forward to meeting the people who are interested and talking with them.”

Those new school board members elected in November will take their seats in January.

Up for re-election are Craigh Fuchs, Matt Bashaw, Carrie Delaney, Jeremy Aagard, Harvey Bergh and Jan Reed. Matt Prigge is the only school board member not up for re-election.
