This year’s swimming lessons are complete at the Kasson Municipal Swimming Pool as most people know it. Next year lessons will resume in the new Kasson Aquatic Center. This summer some 275 youth took part in one of three sessions from age five and up. There are six different levels with level one beginners and level six advanced. The goal is for kids to get comfortable in the water and gain confidence in their swimming stroke, whether it’s the backstroke or extending the hands out of the water with each stroke. Being able to go under water is also a big confidence builder, said assistant pool manager Kate Pappas.

Five years have gone by quickly for business partners Adrianne McNiff and Kristin Alexander, owners of the County Seat Coffeehouse in Mantorville. To celebrate their five-year anniversary there will be a customer appreciation all day Thursday, August 9 with free cake slices and prize drawings. Kristin Alexander said initially one of their keys to success was that they complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Adrianne came into the business with a bakery background and Kristin had advertising and marketing experience along with “barista” training (creating espresso beverages). Now, however, either can slide into any role that needs to be done on a day-to-day basis.

Weather permitting, hot air balloons will be dotting the skies over Kasson early in the morning and evening for the Kasson Festival in the Park this weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Tim and Deb O’Conner of Kasson are in charge of the sunrise and sunset hot air balloon takeoffs, and they will be flying their own too. Weather is an important factor for liftoff and the best times of the day are typically 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. The liftoffs will be taking place in Veteran’s Memorial Park in the field north of the softball fields. Anyone interested in helping with the launching of the balloons is invited to attend a training session Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. in the North Park area where the balloons will be launched.

The K-M Lightning will have a free wrestling clinic for all K-M wrestlers in grades K-12. The clinic will be held August 12, 2002 thru August 16. K-6 will be wrestling from 6-7:15 p.m. and 7-12 from 7:30-9 p.m. Plans are to have the clinic in the high school north gym but the wrestling room may be used one or more of the nights.
